Martha Prieto Lamier

Martha Prieto Larmier is a Cuban American ceramic artist working in her home studio in Coconut Grove. Clay is her medium, shaped by years living in Europe, the Caribbean, Central and South America and traveling in Asia.

Using coils, slabs and pinch pots, she creates one of a kind pieces that retain a human imprint. Stoneware clays become female figures, vessels and mixed media sculptures whose bowls, bottles and vases blur the boundary between sculpture and utility. Fired in an electric kiln with oxide washes, underglaze, glazes, grog, metal wire, leather cord, nails and wood, her perfectly imperfect work reflects the magic that happens in the kiln. She has taught handbuilding at the Ceramic League of Miami for 30 years.
